Debunking the Top 5 Winter Skincare Myths for Men

Seasons change and so does our skin! Skincare is an essential step in our daily routines – and most women treat it as such; Most men, however, tend to take a more nonchalant approach. As social standings change, more men have embarked on a self-care journey, resulting in an influx of new cosmetics consumers.

Winter winds and chilly air can negatively affect men’s skin. It is important to protect your skin from external elements and environmental factors. Without the proper initiative, the weather shift can trigger skin irritations and leave you with unhappy skin. Skin Care is important for men, especially winter skincare, yet it is still commonly neglected. Let us get down to debunking some winter skincare myths for men!

Myth One: Men Can Use the Same Skin Care Throughout the Year

This just is not true! Different temperatures have different effects on our skin, our skincare should cater to these temperatures. Summer weather has higher levels of humidity allowing for our skin to naturally receive more moisture. During winter, these humidity levels drop, and it is best advised to use a more moisturizing skincare routine. It is crucial to moisturize and cleanse accordingly. During dryer times, such as winter, aid your skin by using thicker moisturizers.

Myth Two: You Do Not Need Sunscreen During Winter

False! A big misconception that many people are guilty of believing is that sunscreen is not a necessity all year round, from winter to Spring and Summer to Fall. However, it is just as important to use sunscreen during the winter months as it is any time of the year, like in Summer! The sun’s ultraviolet rays produce radiation that is harmful year-round to not only your skin but also your health. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, “skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canada,” and ultraviolet rays from the sun are one of the leading causes of the disease. Therefore, sunscreen is required 365 days a year, not only for your skin but for your health also. Think about it, the sun is out a lot of the time during the winter, just as it is during the Summer, and UV rays penetrate windows so even if you are not going outside, it is important to put on sunscreen if you will be near any open windows.

It is important for men to put on sunscreen during the winter too

Myth Three: Men and Women Have Different Types of Skin

True! The differences between men and women tend to be a hotly debated topic. However, the biological differences that have resulted in dissimilar skin do seem to be relevant in this case. Dermatologists have found that men tend to have more pores than women, on average, and men’s skin produces more sebum than women’s skin, which can lead to an increased chance of suffering from acne like blackheads or whiteheads. As ironic as it may sound men also have thicker skin than women, men typically have 20% more dermis, the inner layer of skin, than women do. Just because men may have thicker skin does not mean they do not need a skincare routine it is just as important for men to have a good skincare routine as it is for women.

Myth Four: Men Do Not Need to Exfoliate

Exfoliation is an important part of any skincare routine, however, there is a lingering narrative that dismisses the step as nonessential; this is untrue. This narrative is especially harmful during the winter when harsh weather conditions produce more dead skin cells that need exfoliation, however, it is essential not to over-exfoliate as this can strip the skin of its natural oils and damage the moisture barrier. Both chemical and physical exfoliants, including Alpha- Hydroxy Acid (AHA) and Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA) can be beneficial to the skin when used correctly and in the right increments Click HERE for more information on the skincare products available at CADMEN Clinic.

Myth Five: Men Do Not Need Skincare Routines

This is a notion that has been passed down from generation to generation in society, whether it be through media or the actions of those around us, it is untrue that men do not need skincare routines. All men should at least follow a basic skincare routine that includes 2 to 3 steps.

  • Cleanse – Cleansing the skin is important to wash away dirt, grime, and impurities that have accumulated
  • Treatment – If someone is suffering from skin conditions such as dryness, acne, or hyper-pigmentation a serum such as Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, or Salicylic acid serum could be used here. However, this step is optional.
  • Moisturize – It is important to apply moisturizer to the skin, even if you have an oily skin type moisturizer is important for overall skin health, especially in the winter when a thicker cream is suggested.
  • Sun Protection – This fourth and last step is not needed for skincare routines that are done at night right before bed. However, anytime when you will be exposed to UV rays it is key to wear sun protection on your safe, if you suffer from acne look for a non-comedogenic sunscreen that will not clog pores.
